- LETTERS, Page 5Oil Spill in . . . Sandwich Sound
-
- The Alaskan oil spill prompted some readers to ask about
- the name of Prince William Sound. The story goes like this:
- Captain James Cook, the English navigator who first charted the
- area in 1778, named it Sandwich Sound after the fourth Earl of
- Sandwich, an English politician and then Lord of the Admiralty.
- But Sandwich fell out of political favor, and the name was
- changed to Prince William Sound, after William, Duke of
- Clarence, third son of Britain's George III. In 1830 the prince
- became King William IV.
